Chapter 21

He hadn’t slept well since Andrea had left his apartment but now he felt a little better. He was convinced he’d done the right thing even if the police officer had looked at him oddly, as if he couldn’t understand why Leo had reported the incident at all. There was nothing they could do. Leo understood that but at least he felt better for reporting something.

Andrea didn’t need to know.

In the days following her departure, the days since that night, the atmosphere in the warehouse had been depressing. Weighted by something. It was just as well that their new warehouse was so big. It was easier to avoid one another.

Her refusal to discuss things was something he understood, but it didn’t help matters. He’d noticed that she’d looked especially tired this morning. The tell-tale dark circles under her eyes were a sign to him that the situation was taking its toll on her more than he’d realized.

Enough, Leo decided. Things couldn’t carry on like this. They had to resolve their problems and the sooner the better.

He walked towards the warehouse, ready to begin another day at work and passed by Giuseppe’s. He arrived at work with two coffees and a Danish pastry for Andrea.

They no longer had their desks joined together and facing one another as they had before. In their new office, Andrea’s desk was in one corner of the room and his was in the other corner with both of them facing the door. They didn’t have to look at one another, which would have been perfectly fine under normal circumstances but was even more agreeable given the current situation.

“Thanks,” she said, looking slightly surprised. “You didn’t have to.”

“I wanted to.” He hovered around her desk with his warm coffee cup still in his hand. The entire time she kept her eyes on her screen, not once looking at him.

“Look at me, Andrea,” he pleaded and saw the hard line of her lips. Knew she didn’t like to be told what to do. She looked up at him, her eyes cold. Once upon a time they had smoldered with heat. Now she was a different woman altogether.

It was his fault and in time he would make it up to her. If she would let him.

“What?” she asked, when he didn’t move away.

“We can’t go on like this.”

“Like what?”

He let out something between a snort and a puff of disbelief. “Like what? You know what, and don’t say you don’t want to talk about it because we need to. We can’t work with this atmosphere between us. I’m sorry about what happened the other night but I didn’t think it was the right time for us to—”

“Can you please stop talking about it?” she begged. “I get it. Give me some time, okay?” When her voice softened like that, how could he not? He wanted to tell her that he wanted her that night,
